Evangelical Alliance in Spain Discusses Issues Surrounding Secularism and Non-Religiosity in Their Annual Meeting

In a virtual gathering on the 1st of March 2025, the Spanish Evangelical Alliance (AEE) convened to discuss the current societal challenges and their stance on secularism and laicism in Spain. The assembly marked the renewal of leadership for Areópago Protestante and Alianza Solidaria, as well as a renewed logo to boost the Alliance's online presence.

Psychiatrist and author Pablo Martínez, in his keynote address, highlighted the challenges posed by secularism and laicism in contemporary society. He described these ideologies as seductive and repressive, respectively, and warned of the rise of subjectivism and Baumann's liquid thought, which threaten to erode the absolute value of truth.

The AEE's approach to these challenges is grounded in a defense of Christian anthropology, the promotion of bioconservative ethics, and the fostering of alliances to uphold religious and moral convictions in the public square. This stance aligns with the broader evangelical response to secularism in Ibero-American contexts.

Miklos Lukacs, an influential figure in evangelical circles, has warned against the dominance of scientism, which promotes science as the sole source of truth, excluding transcendent views of humanity. He argues this view strips away the spiritual and moral dimensions of human life, leading to a loss of moral compass in society. The AEE shares this concern, seeing secularism as a threat to traditional Christian values and human dignity.

The AEE also champions the defence of human dignity, the natural family, and limits on technological and social changes that secular progressivism might promote. This reflects a broader evangelical effort to sustain Christian moral values against secular cultural shifts.

The assembly concluded with a call to prayer for God to guide the Spanish Evangelical Alliance in its mission to proclaim the truth in the midst of today's challenges. The gathering also marked the beginning of a video documentary reviewing the history of the oldest evangelical body in Spain, which will be commemorated in 2027 as the Alliance approaches its 150th Anniversary.

The work of Alianza Solidaria, the social branch of the AEE, and Areópago Protestante, which includes communication projects and the Unamuno, Friend of Protestants Prize, was also presented during the meeting. Various projects in areas such as church leadership, gospel-centered finances, youth leadership, childhood care, family, missions, theology, history, suicide and mourning, prayer, and bioethics were highlighted.

In the words of Pablo Martínez, the current situation is a moral conflict, not a culture war. The Spanish Evangelical Alliance stands firm in its commitment to uphold truth, human dignity, and Christian values in the face of these challenges.
