Evaluation: Examining the Extar EP9 Tactical Rifle

The gun industry has been abuzz with the release of the EP9 Carbine, a groundbreaking pistol-caliber carbine (PCC) from Extar Firearms. Based in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Extar Firearms, founded by Geoffrey H. Aronow in 1995, has made a name for itself in the gunmaking world, and the EP9 Carbine is no exception.

At its core, the EP9 Carbine is a 9mm Luger-chambered semi-automatic, originally available as a large-format pistol. However, Extar's innovative approach has transformed it into a versatile and efficient canva for gun enthusiasts.

Most components of the EP9 Carbine are made in-house by the Extar team, ensuring a high level of quality and consistency. The carbine features a 16.25" carbon-steel barrel with a 1/2x28 TPI threaded muzzle and a black-nitride finish, providing durability and precision.

The EP9 Carbine's proprietary bolt configuration provides a soft-shooting experience comparable to a rimfire carbine, making it an enjoyable weapon to fire. The buffer's weight and spring have been modified for use with 9mm ammunition, further enhancing its performance.

The carbine boasts an 8" textured polymer handguard with 12 M-Lok accessory slots, offering customisation options for users. The handguard is similar in texture to the removable AR pistol grip, providing a comfortable and secure grip.

The EP9 Carbine's weight comes in at 5 lbs., 4 ozs., with an empty magazine, making it a lightweight yet robust option for shooters. For added convenience, it is equipped with ports for QD and strap-style slings, along with a rubber buttpad.

In terms of accessories, the EP9 Carbine was fitted with a Riton 1 TACTIX ARD red-dot for the range evaluation. Additionally, a Mission First Tactical Battlelink Minimalist six-position shoulder stock is installed, providing flexibility for different shooting positions. An aluminum cap is mounted to the rear of the lower receiver to support a polymer buffer tube, completing the design.

The EP9 Carbine was evaluated using brass-case, standard-pressure loads ranging from practice to defense grade. The carbine performed admirably, demonstrating its versatility and reliability. The single-stage trigger exhibits a clean, but typical, 5-lb., 7-oz., pull, offering a familiar feel for shooters.

In late 2023, Extar released the first PCC configuration of the EP9 platform, making it accessible to a wider audience. The EP9 Carbine is sold directly from the manufacturer for a listed price of $499, offering an affordable yet high-quality option for shooters.

One of the standout features of the EP9 Carbine is its 'mass-delayed' blowback action, developed by Extar. This innovative design allows the carbine to be operated without any lubricants, according to the owner's manual, reducing maintenance requirements and increasing its overall lifespan.

The EP9 Carbine is a testament to Extar Firearms' commitment to innovation and quality. With its lightweight design, soft-shooting experience, and affordable price, it is a compelling choice for shooters seeking a reliable and versatile graphic design tool.
