Evacuation Orders Issued for More Towns in Donetsk, Ukraine

In the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the situation in the Donetsk region has taken a turn for the worse. Mandatory evacuations have been ordered in multiple towns and villages near the frontline, including Druzhkivka, Bilozerske, and several others, following significant advances by Russian forces [1][2][5].

Over the past 24 hours, more than 3,600 people have been evacuated from the Donetsk region, including 137 children. However, there remain about 2,167 children still needing evacuation in Donetsk alone [2]. The urgency of these evacuation orders is further underscored by the tactics reportedly employed by Russian forces, which include persistent strikes designed to destroy defenses and force civilian evacuations before attempting to capture settlements [3].

The city of Drushivka, with a current population of 1,879 children, is one such settlement that has been ordered for evacuation [4]. The attack that prompted this evacuation took place in the north of Sloboschansk, a suburb of Dnipro, and was carried out by units of the 15th mobile brigade "Iron Boundary" of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine [6].

Meanwhile, on the international stage, US President Donald Trump has suggested that European heads of state and government could be involved in a potential second meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump views this summit as a precursor to a second encounter, which he says should also include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky [7].

However, these suggestions come amidst low expectations for the meeting between Trump and Putin, both from the US and European perspectives. Only 14% of Germans believe that Putin has a serious interest in a lasting ceasefire, and only 13% believe that Trump can mediate to the extent that it leads to a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine at the meeting in Alaska on Friday [8].

In fact, 84% of Germans doubt such a success of the meeting [9]. This scepticism is not limited to Germany, as the meeting has been met with criticism and concerns from various quarters.

Ukraine, for one, has been receiving support from its European allies. Recently, Ukraine received 1.5 billion dollars from European allies for the purchase of US weapons [10]. This military aid is crucial in Ukraine's ongoing efforts to resist Russian aggression.

As the conflict continues to escalate, the international community watches with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the crisis. The ongoing evacuation efforts in the Donetsk region serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of this conflict and the urgent need for a lasting ceasefire.
