Ukraine's NATO Hopes Dimmed as Summit Approaches

Amidst preparations for the NATO summit next Tuesday and Wednesday in The Hague, it's looking increasingly unlikely that Ukraine's bid for NATO membership will be mentioned in the final communiqué, according to reports. A brief communiqué, expected to be no more than a page long, will reportedly exclude any reference to Ukraine's aspirations [1][2].

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys has confirmed that Ukrainian membership is not up for discussion during this summit [1]. This deviation from previous summits, where Ukraine's NATO future was a major point of discussion, has sparked concerns in Ukraine.

A Rush-Job Summit to Suit Trump's Tastes

It appears that the summit has been tailored to suit US President Donald Trump's preference for brevity, with only a two-and-a-half hour session planned [1][2]. Diplomats have described the summit as "short and sweet" to avoid any outbursts or embarrassments [1].

Sabotage Arrests in Ukraine

Ukrainian investigators have reportedly arrested five individuals accused of performing acts of sabotage on behalf of Russia [1]. One suspect, a resident of Kyiv, allegedly planned to derail a freight train, while another reportedly set fire to three Ukrainian army jeeps in the Saporischschja region [3]. The suspects were said to have been recruited via Telegram channels for "quick money" [1].

EU Defence Spending Programme Agreed

Member states of the EU have reportedly agreed on a €1.5 billion programme to fund defence spending [1]. The programme is expected to be approved by ambassadors of the 27 EU countries on Monday. After its passage through the European Parliament, the programme could potentially see increased funds [1].

## Growing Prosthetics Need in Russia

A significant rise in the number of prosthetics issued in Russia has been reported by the British Ministry of Defence [3]. Open-source data suggests that around 152,500 prosthetics were issued in 2024, marking a 53% increase from 2023 [3]. Allegations suggest that Russian soldiers with amputated limbs had been facing long waits for necessary prosthetics, indicating potential failures in frontline medical care [3].

Ukrainian Soldier Accused of Betrayal

A Ukrainian soldier is currently in custody for allegedly leaking the coordinates of Ukrainian units, including his own, to Russia's army [1]. The Security Service of Ukraine and the Prosecutor's Office announced his arrest in the Cherkasy region [1]. The soldier is said to have shared the locations of units and military equipment in four regions, as well as names and phone numbers of soldiers via messenger [1]. One Russian missile strike immediately followed the data-sharing on a Ukrainian unit [1]. The suspect faces life imprisonment for treason [1].

Deadly Attacks Continue in Kyiv

The death toll from massive Russian attacks in Kyiv has risen to 28, with 23 deaths occurring at a destroyed apartment building [1]. Over 140 people were injured, with a cruise missile directly hitting a nine-story high-rise [1].

Zelenskyy Plans to Attend NATO Summit

Reports indicate that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans to attend the NATO summit in The Hague, marking his intention to advance the idea of a ceasefire [1]. New goals for defense spending are expected to be agreed upon during the summit [1].

Uncertainty About Selenskyj's Meeting with Trump

Several Ukrainian officials have expressed uncertainty regarding a potential meeting between President Selenskyj and US President Trump at the summit [2]. One official stated that there is a "constant risk that Ukraine could be a victim of circumstances and Trump's short attention span" [2]. The official also commented on "all sorts of promises" that were made but not fulfilled during the G7 summit in Canada [2].

Discussing Support for Defense Projects

High-ranking representatives from Ukraine and the US have discussed possibilities to support defense projects in Ukraine through a joint investment fund, which was established last month [1].

Gerasimov Oversees Russian Advance

Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov is said to be overseeing the advance of Russian forces in eastern Ukraine [1]. This revelation comes as Moscow continues to face concerns about the progress of its troops in the region [1].

Russia Expanding Military Presence Near Finland

Nearly two years after Finland's NATO accession, Russia is reportedly bolstering its military presence near the Russian-Finnish border, according to media reports [6]. Finnish broadcaster Yle has provided satellite imagery showing the start of construction work for an artillery brigade garrison in Kandalaksha, Murmansk Oblast [6]. This is just one of several changes at Russian military sites near the border [6].

US State Department Condemns Russian Drone Attack on Kyiv

The US State Department has condemned a large-scale Russian attack on Kyiv overnight, which resulted in more than 20 deaths [5]. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce expressed the department's disapproval of the attacks and offered condolences, stating that the President's position on attacks against civilian areas is clear [5]. The State Department has also confirmed that a US citizen was killed in the Kyiv attack [5].

Middle East Conflict Causes Concern for Ukrainians
