MMA is hitting hard in Germany. Promoter Oktagon is selling out major arenas, and stadiums aren't far behind. But international players are starting to make things interesting.

A little tale from a small village in the Eifel region tells the story of MMA's swift rise in Germany. People usually go for football or handball matches on weekends in this place. But now, neighbor talks to neighbor about their 16-year-old son whose new passion is MMA training - so much so that he commutes 45 kilometers, round trip, four times a week.

It wasn't expected a few years ago that an aggressive mix of martial arts would take off in Germany, but trends that catch on across the pond eventually land here. Yet, Germany's MMA isn't just a copy-paste of the American Ultimate Fighting Championship. Instead, it's a blend of sport and entertainment.

Leading the charge has been Oktagon MMA, a cheeky Czech promoter who knows a thing or two about showbiz. They've got the knack for spinning engaging stories of fighters and whipping up audience sympathy without delving too deep into the complicated sport. And guess what? They sell out the largest arenas in Germany - the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, and Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle in Stuttgart. Thousands turn up for these events, partly due to spectacular staging, from announcements to press conferences, dramatic fighter entrances, and the sport itself, already action-packed.

But a historic event in Frankfurt's Waldstadion in October 2024 took things to another level. With 58,000 spectators cheering on MMA fighters, the night belonged to local lad Christian Eckerlin, whose past as a former footballer, Hells Angels member, and involvement in Frankfurt's red-light district has left a bitter taste with some critics.

RTL, a significant private broadcaster, jumped on board soon after. For the next three years, Oktagon events in the DACH region will be accessible only on RTL+'s streaming service. This move gave MMA a big boost - and a signal to rival promoters that they better step up their game.

Greedy Fighters Creeping In

So, now everyone wants a taste of Germany's MMA action. Smaller promoters are popping up like mushrooms in a monsoon, even hosting combat sports events in school gyms. Heck, half of Europe is keeping an eye on the German market. The Polish promoter KSW (Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki) is aiming to plant its flag in Berlin in 2026, the Croatian promoter FNC (Fight Nation Championship) eying Munich, and the French representative Ares FC isn't far behind.

A big name doesn't guarantee success - unless the American industry giant UFC makes a comeback after more than a decade. Other noteworthy players still have room for improvement, with Germany's finest locked in long-term contracts with Oktagon, and the marketing skills of the Polish and French promotions...well, let's just say they need work. However, they're not coming empty-handed. When it comes to salary packages, these newcomers can pay higher than the market leader in Germany.

Good times for MMA in Germany and its athletes, who are yet to live the high life from the sport. The fact that the sport is creeping into rural areas shows how it's growing here. International promoters are sniffing around, keen to jump into the action - competition breeds success, after all. And believe us, the pie will get a whole lot bigger.
