In a significant turn of events, NATO recently intercepted three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets near the Estonian island of Vaindloo. The intervention was carried out by Italian Air Force F-35 jets, which were deployed from Ämari Air Base, Estonia.

The incident marked a breach of Estonia's airspace, a Baltic EU and NATO member. The Russian jets were initially identified and escorted by Finnish fighters, before being handed over to the Italians within Estonian airspace.

Last week, more than 20 Russian drones were reported to have entered Polish airspace, adding to the growing concern over these airspace violations.

Following the Estonian incident, Estonia requested consultations under Article 4 of the NATO treaty. This article provides for consultations with allies if a NATO country feels threatened from the outside.

Manfred Weber, the chairman of the European People's Party, has called for a decisive response to Russia's repeated violation of NATO airspace. He also emphasised the need for a strong European air defense in response to Russia's actions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described these repeated violations as a systematic Russian campaign against Europe, NATO, and the West. He urged for a systematic response to these actions.

The intrusion involved three MiG-31 fighter jets near the Baltic Sea island of Vaindloo. During the incident, the jets entered the airspace without permission and stayed in the Estonian airspace for a total of 12 minutes.

On Friday evening, two Russian fighter jets approached a Polish drilling platform in the Baltic Sea at low altitude. Usually, during such incidents, fighter jets take off and accompany the other jets out of the airspace.

It is initially unclear what happened during the interception maneuver. Some reports suggest that some of the Russian drones were shot down by NATO jets.

The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, is reported to be provoking and testing European defense capabilities. These incidents highlight the importance of firm measures being taken by both individual nations and collectively by NATO to maintain peace and security in the region.
