United Nations' Security Council deliberating on enforcing sanctions once again against Iran - European Union's Governing Cabinet: The Council of Ministers

The E3 countries - Germany, France, and the United Kingdom - have joined forces to demand the reinstatement of UN sanctions against Iran. The countries claim that Iran is not adhering to its commitments to limit its nuclear program, a claim backed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The process for reimposing international sanctions is known as the snapback mechanism, a feature within the UN Security Council. This mechanism allows for the reimposition of sanctions that were previously lifted as part of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.

The potential reimposition of sanctions is currently being discussed by the UN Security Council. The E3 countries, along with the USA, are planning to activate the snapback mechanism by the end of the month, as stated by French President Emmanuel Macron.

However, the Iranian government views the potential reimposition of sanctions as illegal and has threatened consequences. If no agreement is reached, the sanctions may be reinstated during the UN General Assembly's general debate in late September.

It is important to note that the sanctions in question were initially lifted as part of the 2015 international nuclear deal with Iran. The deal was aimed at preventing Iran from developing a nuclear bomb, but the USA's unilateral withdrawal and reimposition of sanctions in 2018 led to Iran withdrawing from its commitments under the deal and increasing uranium enrichment.

Recently, a ceasefire between Israel and Iran came into effect on June 24 after 12 days of war. The USA, along with Israel, bombed Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan in June, with the stated aim of preventing Tehran from developing a nuclear bomb.

The UN General Assembly's general debate is scheduled to take place at the end of September, a crucial meeting where the potential reimposition of sanctions on Iran could be decided. The situation remains tense, and it is a matter of global concern as the world watches to see how events unfold.
