United Nations Security Council considers re-implementing economic restrictions against Iran - European Union's Cabinet of Ministers

The United Nations Security Council is currently in discussions regarding the potential reimposition of international sanctions on Iran, following concerns about the country's nuclear programme. The snapback mechanism, a process within the UN Security Council, allows for the reimposition of sanctions that were previously lifted after the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. This mechanism is being considered due to Iran's production of a significantly larger amount of enriched uranium than agreed in the 2015 deal. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran's nuclear program is no longer in compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal. The E3 countries – France, Germany, and the United Kingdom – assert that Iran is not adhering to its commitments to limit its nuclear program. The 2015 nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was signed by the E3 countries, along with the USA, Russia, and China, with the aim of preventing Iran from developing a nuclear bomb. However, the USA unilaterally withdrew from the deal in 2018 and reimposed sanctions on the country. Israel launched a strike against Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordo, Natans, and Isfahan during the June conflict, with the stated aim of preventing Tehran from developing a nuclear bomb. A ceasefire between Israel and Iran came into effect on June 24 after 12 days of war. The current president of the UN Security Council during the debate on the reintroduction of sanctions against Iran is the Republic of Korea (South Korea). If no agreement is reached, the sanctions may be reinstated during the UN General Assembly's general debate in late September. The potential reimposition of sanctions has been met with threats of consequences by the Iranian government, which has condemned the move as illegal. French President Emmanuel Macron expects the E3 countries to activate the snapback mechanism to reimpose sanctions on Iran by the end of the month. The snapback mechanism allows for the reimposition of international sanctions that were previously lifted after the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. The repercussions of this decision remain to be seen, as both parties continue their negotiations and preparations for the upcoming UN General Assembly debate.
