European Union Pushes for Rampant Internet Adoption
The topic of migration continues to be a contentious issue in local politics and society in Germany. On Fri., 19.09.25, at 19:00 hrs, Kantine, Friedrichstr. 21, 10969 Berlin, will host an engaging panel discussion titled "Heated Discussion or Futile Debate?" This event is part of a special project "Accomplished?" on the website, exploring big questions surrounding the topic of migration since the long summer of migration in 2015.
The panel will feature Gilda Sahebi, a journalist and author focusing on authoritarianism, German domestic and foreign policy, and the Middle East. Sahebi, a qualified physician and political scientist, is known from talk shows and her high-reach social media channels. Ahmad Katlesh, a writer and journalist living in Berlin, grew up in Damascus and fled to Jordan in 2013 before coming to Germany in 2016. Katlesh has published several literary books in Arabic and German.
Gerald Knaus, the founder of the independent think tank European Stability Initiative (ESI) in Berlin, focusing on the future of democracy, human rights, flight, and migration, will also be part of the panel. Knaus was involved in the migration agreement between the EU and Turkey in March 2016.
The panel will discuss a migration policy that respects human rights and can garner political majorities by promoting a humane and efficient asylum and integration process, countering the current hostile societal mood, and rejecting restrictive, exclusionary measures like pushbacks. They emphasize involving media, politicians, civil society, and citizens to develop a human-rights-compliant system fostering political support and social coexistence.
Attendance for this event requires a previously booked ticket, which can be obtained via the ticket portal. Admission will be at 18:30 hrs. Audience questions are highly welcome before and during the talk.
Progressive forces argue that integration has largely succeeded but needs time and resources in some places. However, some parties beyond the far right are undecided on what paths and ways, and from which regions of the world, people may migrate to Germany. Right-wing extremists in Germany harbor deportation fantasies and mobilize against refugees with racist words and slogans. Refugees who make it to Germany find real integration difficult and face a society that is increasingly hostile towards them. The German society seems overwhelmed in organizing an efficient and dignified arrival process.
The Federal Republic of Germany has committed to universal human rights and the right to asylum. This event aims to contribute to a constructive dialogue on migration, fostering understanding and empathy, and promoting a humane and efficient asylum and integration process. Tobias Bachmann, an author, journalist, and political educator at the website, will moderate this talk.
Join us for an enlightening discussion on migration, a topic that is crucial for the future of Germany and the world. Let's move beyond the heated debates and work together towards a more inclusive and compassionate society.
