In a significant move to alleviate the ongoing crisis in the Gaza Strip, Germany and Jordan have announced the immediate implementation of a humanitarian air bridge. The joint initiative was revealed by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on July 29, 2025, following a meeting of the Federal Government's Security Cabinet.

The air bridge aims to provide essential aid to the people of Gaza, independent of Israel's efforts, potentially signalling pressure on Israel to enhance humanitarian access. Defence Minister Boris Pistorius is coordinating the operation closely with France and the United Kingdom, which have also expressed readiness to participate.

Germany has deployed two A400M transport aircraft to Jordan for aid operations. The cooperation with Jordan facilitates transit and delivery logistics, ensuring a smooth flow of aid into Gaza. The German Armed Forces had already participated in airdrops over the Gaza Strip last year.

Israel itself has initiated humanitarian actions, including aid airdrops and establishing corridors for UN convoys in Gaza, coordinated with international organizations. However, Germany’s air bridge to Gaza, operated in cooperation with Jordan, represents a separate and immediately active initiative to deliver aid from outside Israel’s direct control.

Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz will welcome Jordan's King Abdullah II in Berlin on Tuesday at 12:00 PM. A joint press conference is scheduled for 1:40 PM, though the specific agenda for the meeting remains undisclosed. The Israeli army has announced "tactical pauses" in its operations in parts of the Gaza Strip to allow safe passage for aid convoys.

The humanitarian air bridge reflects Germany’s active role in addressing the Gaza crisis through direct aid delivery, in partnership with Jordan and European allies, while balancing complex geopolitical considerations. As the crisis continues, the international community remains committed to providing aid and support to the people of Gaza.
