Tens of thousands of people in Tel Aviv and other cities are demanding a deal for the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip, as negotiations to end the war between Israel and Hamas remain at a standstill.

The current stalemate in negotiations, which have seen efforts mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the US, has failed to yield a ceasefire agreement as of early August 2025. However, recent reports suggest that Hamas may be willing to re-engage in talks and possibly accept a partial hostage release.

The situation escalated on October 7, 2023, when Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist organizations launched an attack on Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and more than 250 hostages. Since then, more than 61,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the Hamas-controlled health authority, although the number does not distinguish between civilians and fighters.

The Israeli security cabinet has approved a plan for the IDF to take full control of Gaza City, emphasizing five principles: disarming Hamas, securing all hostages’ release, demilitarization of Gaza, and establishing an alternative civil administration not linked to Hamas or the Palestinian Authority.

However, the UN Security Council has held emergency briefings due to the escalation and humanitarian concerns, and the plan has sparked global criticism. Germany, Britain, Italy, New Zealand, and Australia have criticized plans to conquer the city of Gaza.

Israel's leadership has not specified when the military operation to capture Gaza City will begin, but military analysts predict it could last weeks or months. Family members of hostages held by Hamas fear that the capture of Gaza City would be a death sentence for their loved ones.

Meanwhile, mediators Qatar and the US are reportedly working on a new proposal for a comprehensive agreement to end the war. The UN Security Council is convening an emergency meeting today at 4:00 PM CEST to discuss Israel's war plans, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres warning of a "dangerous escalation".

As the situation continues to unfold, the international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the crisis and the safe return of all hostages.

  2. The escalation of war-and-conflicts in Gaza has led to a surge in crime-and-justice-related news, as more than 1,200 deaths and over 250 hostages were reported since the October 7, 2023, attack.
  3. As the Israeli military prepares to take full control of Gaza City, sports-betting platforms are seeing increased interest in predictions about the duration of the military operation, adding another layer to the mixed landscape of global news.
