In a significant development, a Europe-wide operation has led to the arrest of five Syrian nationals aged between 26 and 37 in Germany, the Netherlands, and Bosnia. The suspects are accused of running a large human smuggling gang that has been operating since at least 2021.

The gang is believed to have smuggled at least 500 people, primarily Syrian migrants, via the Balkan route into Germany and Western Europe. However, investigators suspect the actual number to be much higher. At the peak of their operations in 2022, the gang reportedly smuggled up to around 480 people per day.

The fees for these smuggling operations ranged from €2,500 to €4,500 per person, depending on the route and complexity of the operation. This criminal network is estimated to have earned at least €1.4 million between 2022 and 2025. Some authorities suspect that the total illicit profits could approach €10 million.

Law enforcement agencies from Germany, the Netherlands, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Europol, and Eurojust coordinated the operation. Simultaneous raids were carried out on apartments in Dortmund and Bochum (Germany) and Houten (Netherlands). During the raids, investigators seized extensive evidence including smartphones, vehicles, and small amounts of narcotics suspected to be linked to the criminal activities.

The ongoing investigations consider these arrests possibly just the tip of the iceberg, with surveillance and intelligence indicating a larger network potentially responsible for smuggling thousands more migrants into Europe. As the investigations continue, no detailed public updates have yet been provided on prosecutions or extended network dismantling.

This operation serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing human smuggling activities that exploit vulnerable individuals seeking a better life in Europe. It also underscores the importance of international cooperation in combating such organised and commercial crimes.
