European Ryder Cup Team Overlooks Eight Notable Golfers Led by Luke Donald
Ryder Cup 2025: Team Europe Announced and Contenders Miss Out
The Ryder Cup, one of golf's most prestigious events, is set to take place at Bethpage Black in New York from September 26-28, 2025. The European team has been announced, with some familiar faces and a few surprises.
Aaron Rai, who had a solid season on the PGA Tour with T4 finishes at the Mexico Open and Wyndham Championship, missed out on a spot in the European team. Rai, known for his match play prowess, will likely look towards 2027 and a potential spot at Adare Manor.
Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton, and Rasmus Hojgaard were already confirmed as automatic qualifiers. Hojgaard, who recently rejoined the DP World Tour, is the only rookie in Team Europe for the 2025 Ryder Cup.
Another notable absentee from the team is Harry Hall. Despite a superb season on the PGA Tour, including not missing a cut since mid-March, Hall missed out on a spot in the European team for the second time, finishing runner-up at the Omega European Masters.
Luke Donald, the European captain, announced six captain's picks for the Ryder Cup: Shane Lowry, Jon Rahm, Sepp Straka, Viktor Hovland, Ludvig Aberg, and Matt Fitzpatrick. Sergio Garcia, with the most points (28.5) in Ryder Cup history, was not among them due to his recent form not being good enough for a captain's pick.
Alex Noren claimed the win at the British Masters in 2025, but there were other notable performances. Thomas Detry won the WM Phoenix Open but had a disappointing season after that, failing to gain a captain's pick. Matt Wallace came agonizingly close to defending his Omega European Masters title, but a costly error at the par 5 14th prevented him from winning.
Marco Penge, who registered two victories on the DP World Tour, also missed out on a spot in the 2025 Ryder Cup team. However, Penge is on-course to secure one of the 10 PGA Tour cards on offer from the DP World Tour, potentially positioning him for the Ryder Cup in 2027.
As for the players who were considered for but did not qualify for the Ryder Cup team in 2025, there is no publicly available information on this matter. The focus now shifts to the Ryder Cup 2025, where Team Europe will aim to defend their title against Team USA.
