The Union Fraktionschef Jens Spahn is urging for a European "Iron Dome" air defense shield, modeled after Israel's successful missile defense system. According to Spahn, who spoke to the "Stuttgarter Zeitung" and other outlets, Europe must safeguard itself against incoming rockets, drones, and aircraft – even in space.
"We've got to stretch an Iron Dome over Europe," Spahn states emphatically. "The federal government has got to commit to this full force, and at lightning speed," he emphasizes, citing events both in Israel and Ukraine as reasons for concern. "We've got a duty to protect our population," adds the CDU politician. He advocates for Europe to advance the Iron Dome project as a key pillar of the transatlantic alliance.
As for the USA's future role, Donald Trump has indicated a desire for American spending not to fall under the new NATO spending target requirements. When a journalist questioned Trump about whether he expects NATO members' spending to amount to five percent of GDP in the future, Trump responded, "I think they should do that. I don't think we should. But I think they should."
Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelenskyy accuses Russian leader Putin of wanting war and failing to seek peace, following Putin's appearance at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum. "Russia continues to issue threats, as usual, completely bonkers," claims Zelenskyy. Despite Putin's optimistic speeches, Zelenskyy asserts that the Russian economy is struggling significantly. "Let's support this economic turmoil even more!" he says.
In a somewhat surprising move, the Ukrainian military plans to form an all-female drone defense unit. The unit will be part of the 427th Separate Regiment for unmanned systems "Rarog," according to news portal "Ukrajinska Prawda." The crew's formation comes amid an increasing number of drone attacks, primarily by Russia, during the ongoing war.
The past few days have seen numerous warnings of new air strikes, with drones reportedly reaching towards Kyiv. There is an air alert across Ukraine's eastern half and the Kyiv region in the evening, with the army alerting the public to various Russian drone groups.

The Iron Dome is a short-range air defense system developed by Israel, with the US as its main backer. Its primary use is to intercept rockets and artillery shells within roughly 70 kilometers, protecting civilian areas. Although it has been tested extensively in various conflicts, no system is completely foolproof, as evidenced by the fact that some Iranian missiles have breached the Iron Dome during recent conflicts. However, efforts to expand Europe's air defense capabilities are underway, including the formation of a European multi-layered air defense system through multinational cooperation initiatives. This push for better air defense becomes increasingly important in the context of the Ukraine War and the use of missile and drone attacks in the conflict.
