European Parliament's Perspective on Its Function in the European Union

In a series of escalating incidents, Russia has breached the airspace of several NATO member countries, most notably Estonia and Poland, causing concern among European leaders.

Last week, more than 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace, prompting a swift response from NATO forces. The details of the incident were announced by the spokeswoman for the Ministry of the Interior on X, although the specifics of the interception maneuver remained initially unclear.

On Friday evening, Estonia found itself in a similar situation when Russian fighter jets violated its airspace. The Estonian army reported three MiG-31 fighter jets entering the airspace near Vaindloo, staying for 12 minutes without permission. The Russian jets flew over the Petrobaltic drilling platform at a height of 150 meters, breaching the security zone.

NATO immediately reacted, with the Italian air force's F-35 fighter jets involved in the interception. Some of the Russian drones were also shot down by NATO jets last week.

Estonia has requested consultations under Article 4 of the NATO treaty following the incident, echoing a similar move by Estonia after a violation on Friday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described these repeated Russian airspace violations as a systematic campaign against Europe, NATO, and the West. Manfred Weber, the EPP leader, called for a decisive response to the Russian violations and emphasized the need for a strong European air defense. Weber believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin is testing the European defense capability.

The border guard also confirmed the incident on X. In these situations, fighter jets typically take off and accompany the violating jets out of the airspace. Two Russian fighter jets approached a Polish drilling platform in the Baltic Sea at low altitude, violating the security zone over the platform.

These incidents underscore the ongoing tension between Russia and its Western neighbours, and the importance of a robust NATO response to such breaches of international airspace.
