European Parliament's Conservative Members Plea for Official Condemnation Over the Assassination of Charlie Kirk
In the wake of the tragic events of recent weeks, the political landscape has been shaken by the shootings of American conservative political activist Charlie Kirk and the stabbing of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska.
The murders of both individuals have been heavily condemned by US President Donald Trump, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and the European Parliament. President Meloni called Kirk's killing a 'shocking' and 'a deep wound for democracy'. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola was 'shocked at the absolutely horrific assassination' of Kirk.
In response to these tragedies, 84 lawmakers have signed a proposal for a resolution against political violence. This resolution, promoted by Italian members Susanna Ceccardi and Paolo Borchia, calls for 'zero tolerance' toward political and extremist violence and urges media to report such attacks honestly. If deemed acceptable, the resolution will be referred to a Parliamentary commission for development into a proper resolution. The developed resolution will be voted on by the entire Chamber.
The resolution has been signed by members of the far-right Patriots for Europe (PfE) group, as well as members from the European Conservatives and Reformists, including Dominik Tarczynski, Carlo Fidanza, and Charlie Weimers. However, the political discussions surrounding the resolution have not been without controversy.
A clash occurred during a plenary session of the European Parliament when an MEP from the right-wing Sweden Democrats party called for a minute's silence to commemorate Kirk's death, which was denied by vice-president Katarina Barley. This incident led to a session that turned into political mudslinging.
Meanwhile, Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show has been taken off air due to remarks about Charlie Kirk's death. The show's comments were deemed inappropriate and disrespectful towards the memory of the slain activist.
Iryna Zarutska, the Ukrainian refugee who was stabbed in North Carolina in August, is another victim of senseless violence. Other political groups have been asked for their positions on the resolution. The Conference of Presidents, a body formed by the presidents of Parliament's political groups, will decide whether the resolution will be on the agenda of the next plenary session, scheduled from 6 to 9 October in Strasbourg.
Charlie Kirk, an American right-wing conservative political activist and author, was shot and killed on September 10, 2025, while speaking at Utah Valley University. His funeral service took place 11 days later in Glendale, Arizona, at the State Farm Stadium, where tens of thousands attended, and notable figures including former President Donald Trump spoke.
As the political landscape continues to grapple with these tragic events, the call for zero tolerance against political violence remains a unifying message in the face of senseless acts of violence.
