Unleashing Europe's Leadership Potential

European Parliament President Manfred Weber calls for strengthened European leadership as the United States pulls back from its global role.

In an exclusive chat with our website, Manfred Weber, president of the European People's Party (EPP), sounded the alarm for Europe to take the global stage by storm. With the US no longer seen as the rock of stability it once was, the time has come for Europe to step up and fill the void.

Weber, who was re-elected as EPP president during the Valencia Congress with 502 out of 563 valid votes, has no illusions about the US under the Trump administration. He described the early days of the administration as marked by "disruptive and erratic behavior," hinting at the perceived lack of a steady hand at the helm of global affairs.

"The world needs a stable anchor, and in a world where America is no longer that anchor, Europe is called upon to take on the mantle," Weber said. "We must rise to the occasion and provide the world with a stable and reliable vision."

The divide between Europe and the US was painfully evident when Vice President JD Vance addressed the Munich Security Conference in February. In his speech, Vance accused the EU of stifling free speech, a charge that Weber vehemently rejects.

"We don't follow Vice President Vance's line of thought that anything goes," Weber said unequivocally. "In Europe, we believe in the rule of law, and that means we cannot tolerate lies, hate speech, or any form of antisemitism."

European Identity: Stand Tall, Stand Proud

Weber emphasized the importance of defining a unique European identity that is free from external influence, whether it comes from the US, China, or Russia.

"We must stand tall and stand proud as Europeans," Weber declared. "Our identity is not an imitation of the American way of life, nor the Chinese or Russian model. We have our own unique way of life, and we must be proud of it and defend it."

Despite advocating for a measure of strategic distance from Washington, Weber makes it clear that defense cooperation remains an essential aspect of Europe's relationship with the US.

"There is still work to be done on the defense front and in the realm of external affairs, and that is a task we are determined to tackle," Weber said.

In conclusion, Weber envisions a Europe that is no longer content to follow in the footsteps of other global powers, but one that leads with its own unique vision and identity. A Europe that stands tall, stands proud, and shines as a beacon of hope for a troubled world.
