European Parliament Establishes Permanent Office in Kyiv
The European Union (EU) is gearing up to adopt a new round of sanctions against Russia, as confirmed by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The proposed 19th sanctions package is expected to be adopted soon, with a focus on expediting efforts to disengage from Russian gas and oil, and targeting the use of cryptocurrencies in Russia to circumvent sanctions.
In a recent statement, von der Leyen emphasised her aim to present a proposal for this next EU-Russia sanctions package soon. This proposal will not only aim to tighten the screws on Russia's energy sector and banks, but also address the issue of frozen Russian assets for Ukraine's support, as mentioned by German Finance Minister and other EU officials.
The sanctions package is not limited to these areas alone. EU Finance Ministers, in coordination with partners, are also working on tackling an still-operating shadow fleet in Russia, as mentioned by the EU Parliament President, Roberta Metsola.
Metsola further highlighted the importance of these sanctions, stating that they are not just about punishing Russia, but also about supporting Ukraine and upholding the rules-based international order. The EU's collective efforts are aimed at ensuring that Russia feels the impact of its actions and is held accountable for its aggression against Ukraine.
As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, the EU remains committed to standing with Ukraine and imposing costs on Russia for its actions. The proposed sanctions package is a testament to this commitment and a clear signal that the EU will not back down in the face of Russian aggression.
In the coming days, the details of the proposed sanctions package will be discussed and finalised. The EU and its partners are determined to send a strong message to Russia, and to ensure that the costs of its actions are felt both domestically and internationally. The EU's unity and resolve in the face of Russian aggression is unwavering, and the proposed sanctions package is a key part of this response.
