Urgent Plea for US Aid to Ukraine by European Parliamentarians
In a united stand, over 100 parliamentarians from diverse European nations call upon the United States to swiftly provide critical financial assistance to Ukraine, battling intense pressure from Russia's ongoing aggression. This joint appeal for aid carries the signatures of prominent German officials, such as Michael Roth and Nils Schmid (SPD), Norbert Röttgen and Roderich Kiesewetter (CDU), as well as Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP).
The urgent demand for US aid underscores the escalating threat to Ukraine's independence and the pressure on its armed forces. Europe's collective commitment to freedom and democracy is at stake, and this appeal represents a collective call to action in support of a nation on the brink.
The letter underscores the importance of shared responsibility in addressing the crisis and increasing the transatlantic partnership's effectiveness. While Europe has been providing aid equal to that provided by the United States, there is a pressing need to increase the alliance's joint response to Russia’s aggression.
The current political landscape in the United States has led to a standstill in the continuation of US aid for Ukraine, requested by President Joe Biden. The objections from both Republicans and Democrats in Congress present an obstacle to the provision of much-needed assistance.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has been invited to address the situation in Washington, scheduled for Tuesday. Ukraine has been resisting a large-scale Russian invasion for almost two years.
The European Union's commitment to Ukraine remains unwavering, with more than EUR 134 billion having been provided since the war's commencement. This encompasses EUR 67 billion in financial, economic, and humanitarian aid, along with EUR 38 billion in military support. Over EUR 70 billion has been allocated for supporting refugees within the EU.
The EU has also played a crucial role in providing military aid, including ammunition and air defense systems, as well as training for 75,000 soldiers. Furthermore, the EU is supporting Ukraine's path towards EU membership and preparing further sanctions to hamper Russia's ability to wage war.
European MPs reiterate their belief that Ukraine belongs within the European Union and advocate for matching Ukraine's reform efforts with corresponding EU membership opportunities. The EU has established the Ukraine facility, offering up to EUR 50 billion in grants and loans to support Ukraine's functioning and reform agenda.
