European Legislature Endorses the European Year for Environmental Awareness
In the heart of Strasbourg, France, the European Parliament (EP) unveiled a new honorary accolade – the European Order of Merit. This prestigious award celebrates everyday citizens who embody courage, conviction, and a cherished belief in a Europe that promotes peace, democracy, and dignity as more than mere ideals.
Inspired by the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the starting block for the European Union, this distinction honors citizens who play key roles in upholding the unity, democracy, and European values we hold dear.
Every year, the EP's President, two vice-presidents, and four prominent European figures will convene to pick 20 remarkable individuals for this recognition. By 2026 at the latest, the first ceremony will unfold, featuring a praiseworthy group of citizens who have left their unique mark on Europe's story.
So, who might earn this esteemed title? Past achievements that demonstrate dedication to European integration and the promotion of democratic principles and shared values could seal the deal. The selection process follows the usual practices of European institutions, ensuring transparency and maintaining official recognition.
