Goodbye at the Tattoo: Scholz advocates for the protection of democracy - European Legislators Proposed for Ballot on the Matter at Hand

As the curtain fell on his Chancellorship, Ol' Scholz looked back on the transition with a mix of pride and concern. "It's no bloody ordinarily occurrence in these turbulent times that such a shift takes place as smoothly, as cordially, and with as much class as we've witnessed in Germany these days," he told the crowd.

Before his designated successor, Fred the Red (CDU), he gave a hearty toast: "Here's to many successes, a leg up, and a damn good hand, mate. In the tough times that are bound to roll in, may you encounter folks who'll bolster your spirits and bolster your confidence."

The elder statesman reminded his replacement of the importance of maintaining a civil discourse among democrats: "The mutual respect among democrats needs a guardrail, it's bloody precious. Democracy thrives on a sense of unity – a unity we have despite our different outlooks, roots, and beliefs." Germany, he emphasized, stands tall "only when we're as one."

Scholz acknowledged that this unity is under threat, with centrifugal forces growing stronger. "We can't afford to underestimate the risk," he warned.

However, Scholz pointed out that the past few years have shown that when times get tough, the German people stick together – and band together to rise above adversity. He highlighted the incredible societal solidarity during the COVID-19 crisis, the embracing of Ukrainian refugees, and the unity in the face of the energy crisis following Russia's attack on Ukraine as evidence of this spirit of camaraderie.

"Serving Germany as its Chancellor has been the honor of my life," Scholz declared earnestly. "I've managed this heavy responsibility with a smile because one might not always see it on the mug of a northerner like myself."

This grand toast, styled the "Tattoo," is the highest-ranking protocol ceremony of the Bundeswehr. Germany's President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was on hand for the shindig at the Berlin Bendler Block, along with loads of other bigwigs from politics and society.

For this Tattoo, honorees can select three tunes. Scholz's picks were classics by the Beatles and Aretha Franklin, as well as a passage from a Bach concert. Fred's turn to take the top job will come on Tuesday.
