In a significant political shift, Romania elects its latest Head of State, with the chosen candidate known for his conservative leanings and strong support for European unity.

Got a Political Pickle? Romania's Choosing Its Next Prez!

European legislators have endorsed a Commission-proposed directive aimed at safeguarding employees from hazards associated with ionising radiation exposure.

Take a seat and grab a popcorn, 'cause this Sunday's ruling Romania's next prezzy. With far-right George Simion and pro-European Bucharest mayor Nicusor Dan in a head-to-head, this election's a juicy one. Simion's the clear favorite, snagging nearly 41% in the first round, while Dan was 20 points behind.

Things got turbulent in Romania since November. You might know Calin Georgescu, the seemingly out-of-nowhere far-right contender who won the first round, right? Well, the game was called off when the Constitutional Court raised eyebrows over suspected Russian election tampering, and Georgescu was booted from the rerun. Enter Simion, another shiny right-wing contender.

If Simion hauls in the win, Romania will see its very first far-right president. Simion's pledged to put Romanian interests first, slamming Brussels' laws as "absurd" and planning to chop up military support for Ukraine. On Sunday, he balloted in Mogosoaia, near Bucharest, with good ol' Georgescu. "Calin Georgescu for president!" cheered the faithful crowd upon arrival. Tens of thousands took to the streets last year upon the runoff election's annulment and Georgescu's axing, sometimes stirring up some violent protests.

Dan, 55,'s been picking up steam lately. He cast his vote in Fagaras, his hometown. He told reporters, "This is a big 'ol turning point, a vital election." Dan voted for "a European direction, not for Romania's isolation." Catalin Birca, a 57-year-old retiree, spilled his beans to AFP after voting in Bucharest. "I voted with a hope for a better life," he shared, expressing optimism that the country stays pro-European. "Where else would we go? Back to square one?" Birca added.

The campaign's been full of tension. Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, a social democrat, took the high road and vacated his post unexpectedly earlier this week. The new prezzy in charge is responsible for slapping together a fresh cabinet. Polls closed at 9 PM local time (8 PM CET) and projection projections based on exit polls were expected soon after, with the first results dropping overnight.

Got an inside scoop? Turns out, Dan's the centrist, liberal mayor of Bucharest. He champions a moderate pro-EU and pro-NATO stance, favoring good relations with Eu about mates. Georges Simion, a candidate from the far-right nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), stands on hard-right, ultra-nationalist grounds. He's against more military aid for Ukraine and supports the unification of Romania and Moldova. These jokers, huh? [2][3][4]
