Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, Chair of the Defense Committee of the EU Parliament, has reiterated the importance of clarifying the term "security guarantee" in negotiations with Ukraine. The proposed guarantee would involve commitments from Germany and potentially other partners to support Ukraine's defense and deter further Russian aggression.

However, it's crucial to note that this does not automatically mean Ukraine will become a NATO member. Instead, the focus is on tailored guarantees to protect Ukraine, which could include joint preparations for peacekeeping or support if Russia attacks again. In fact, a security guarantee could potentially mean that Ukraine would not join NATO but could still invoke Article 5, implying military support in case of another Russian attack.

Strack-Zimmermann has expressed her belief that a bi- or trilateral meeting with Ukraine in the coming weeks would be right and important. If a conversation with Ukraine does occur, she suggests that Europe should accompany President Zelensky.

The German Chancellor's views on the recent meeting in Washington remain positive, with Strack-Zimmermann stating that the meeting made an impression on President Trump, who perceives Europe as real states, not Mickey Mouse. European representatives and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte attended the meeting, as previously mentioned.

Clarification of the security guarantee is necessary to avoid any misunderstandings, as misunderstandings would only benefit Russian President Putin. Strack-Zimmermann proposes a bi- or trilateral meeting with Ukraine in the near future, considering it an essential step towards ensuring a clear and mutual understanding of the proposed guarantees.
