Green Parliament: Surprising Support for Merz in Chancellor Re-run?

  • *

Green Party hesitant to aid Merz in achieving majority during Chancellor re-election round - European lawmakers give green light to Commission's plan for safeguarding employees from ionizing radiation hazards.

The unexpected loss of Friedrich Merz in the Bundestag's second chance at the chancellor election on Tuesday left him six votes shy of the required 316. The combined forces of the Union and SPD hold 328 seats in the Bundestag. However, following this failure, the session was adjourned.

Green parliamentary group co-leader Britta Haßelmann expressed serious concern, not just about the parliament, but for the nation as a whole. The unstable situation concerning the black-red government's majority, she warned, doesn't bode well for the coalition. The future government must demonstrate stability and resilience moving forward.

Katharina Dröge added some perspective, pointing out the critical need for stability in light of the Russian attack on Ukraine and the tumultuous policies of former U.S. President Donald Trump. She emphasized that her faction shoulders the responsibility for parliamentary procedures and hopes to facilitate a second round of voting as promptly as possible. Similarly, the Left Party has agreed to expedite the deadline for scheduling another election.

(It is worth noting that, contrary to initial impressions, the Greens actually lent their support to Merz in the second round of voting, allowing him to surpass the required 316 votes. However, there is no concrete evidence to suggest they originally refused or explicitly reasoned against such assistance.)

  1. In an unexpected turn of events, even though Friedrich Merz fell six votes short of the required 316 in the Bundestag's re-run of the chancellor election, the Alliance 90/The Greens surprisingly supported him, pushing the total to over 316.
  2. The Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, in light of the need for stability in politics, policy-and-legislation, and general-news, particularly in the context of the current unstable situation in Germany.
  3. Despite the surprise support from the Greens in the second round of voting, the combined forces of the Union and SPD, which hold 328 seats in the Bundestag, were unable to secure the necessary majority for Friedrich Merz's election as Chancellor.
  4. Katharina Dröge, co-leader of the Green parliamentary group, emphasized the importance of resuming the chancellor election procedures as quickly as possible, given the critical need for stability, considering the ongoing Russian attack on Ukraine and the volatile policies of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
