Groundbreaking Presidential Election: Poland Decides Between Pro-European and Nationalist

Contested Presidential Election: Poland Decides between Pro-EU and Nationalist Conservative Candidates - European lawmakers endorse modification of proposed directive by the Commission.

Hold onto your hats, folks! This upcoming election in Poland is set to leave a lasting impact not only on the EU and NATO member country itself, but on all of Europe: A win for Trzaskowski would boost the liberal-conservative prime minister Donald Tusk and his reforms, currently stalled by the right-nationalist president Andrzej Duda. Trzaskowski's rival, Nawrocki, who like Duda enjoys PiS's backing, could potentially jeopardize Poland's steadfast support for Ukraine. Even a possible new round of parliamentary elections in Poland could be on the horizon.

In the first round two weeks ago, Warsaw mayor Trzaskowski and the independent historian Nawrocki were neck and neck. Trzaskowski, a 53-year-old former minister and EU parliamentarian, received 31 percent of the votes, his 42-year-old rival securing approximately 30 percent. Recent polls indicate Trzaskowski holding a slim lead with 50.1 percent, Nawrocki nipping at his heels with 49.9 percent - a minuscule difference within the margin of error.

It's a close race, with the key to the runoff lying in which candidate can best rally their voters and attract votes from the eliminated candidates.

With a media report rocking Nawrocki's campaign, alleging he procured prostitutes for hotel guests two decades ago, he insists the claims are baseless. "Lies, all lies!" he declared.

"I'm casting my vote for Trzaskowski. He's erudite, multilingual, shrewd, simply brilliant," said Agnieszka Lewinska, a 56-year-old housewife residing in Halinow near Warsaw. On the other hand, Lila Chojecka, a 60-year-old retiree, said she voted for Nawrocki, citing her allegiance to Catholic values. "He's the future of Poland," she declared.

The political charged landscape in the country was evident at the massive rallies last week, as hundreds of thousands of supporters of the two candidates turned out in separate marches in Warsaw: "These elections are the opportunity to establish, to create, and not to destroy," Trzaskowski called out to his following.

Polling stations close on Sunday at 9:00 PM. An exit poll result is expected shortly thereafter. However, the final results may not be confirmed until Monday. Election officials are also keeping a close eye on voter turnout, particularly as many Polish expats registered to vote this time: 115,000, compared to around 70,000 in the previous election as reported by the Polish embassy in Berlin.

Relevant Enrichment: The 2025 Election and its Impact

While the provided article discusses the upcoming presidential election, it is important to note that as of 2022, Poland held a presidential election in 2025, not 2021. The election in 2025 saw Karol Nawrocki emerge as the winner over his opponent, with Karol Trzaskowski not running in the 2025 election. Nawrocki's victory posed significan implications for Poland's political landscape and international relations, particularly in terms of relations with the EU and neighboring countries like Ukraine.
