The dust hasn't settled from Romania's tumultuous political landscape, and the nation finds itself at a crossroads. In the forthcoming election this Sunday, two candidates are vying for the highest seat - the far-right George Simion and the pro-European Bucharest mayor, Nicusor Dan. George Simion, having clinched a staggering 41% of the votes in the initial round, is looking poised to take the lead. Dan, on the other hand, has gained ground in recent polls, sees this election as a pivotal moment, and is fighting tooth and nail for the pro-European cause.

The political instability in Romania dates back to November, when the previously obscure far-right candidate Calin Georgescu shocked the country by winning the first round of the presidential election. The Constitutional Court later invalidated the election due to suspicions of Russian election meddling, causing Georgescu to be disqualified from the re-run. Simion, backed by the right-wing camp, stepped into the breach and now faces off against Dan in the second round.

If Simion manages to win the election, Romania would welcome its first far-right president. During the campaign, Simion has promised to champion Romania's interests and labeled Brussels' laws as "absurd." He also plans to cut funding for military support to Ukraine. On Sunday, the 38-year-old Simion cast his vote in Mogosoaia, near the capital Bucharest, along with the disqualified far-right Georgescu. The duo's supporters could be heard chanting, "Calin Georgescu for president!" upon their arrival. Following the annulled election last year and Georgescu's disqualification, tens of thousands took to the streets in sometimes violent protests.

Dan has managed to close the gap significantly. "This is a critical election," Dan said after casting his vote in his hometown of Fagaras, in the heart of the country. He emphasized the need for a European direction and warned against Romania's isolation. A 57-year-old retiree, Catalin Birca, expressed his support for Dan after voting in Bucharest. "I voted with the hope of a better life," Birca said, reiterating the importance of keeping Romania pro-European. "What else would we do? Start all over again?" he added.

The tense political climate has only intensified in recent days, with the unexpected resignation of former Prime Minister and social democrat Marcel Ciolacu. The new president will have the power to appoint the new prime minister, making this election crucial not only for Romania's future but also for the entire European Union. Polls are set to close at 9 PM local time (8 PM CET), with exit polls and first results expected to be announced overnight.
