A Brief Skirmish: Israel vs Iran

European foreign relations strategy

In a heartbeat, the world held its breath - unsure if the standoff between Israel and Iran would erupt into all-out war. Then, came a surprise announcement from the unlikely source - U.S. President Donald Trump, declaring an end to the so-called "Twelve-Day War". The previous evening, Trump had ordered the drop of the world's most potent non-nuclear bombs on heavily guarded Iranian nuclear facilities.

A Symbolic Strike as the Beginning of Detente

At first, it seemed like the worst-case scenario unfolded when Iran retaliated with rocket attacks on the largest US military base in the region in Qatar. But, as tensions mounted, the attack took on a more symbolic character, aimed at saving face for Tehran. The end of the conflict between Israel and Iran, although uncertain, might actually serve the interests of both parties. Given Iran's limited defensive capabilities against Israel, a prolonged war was unlikely to be in their favor.

Trump Thanks Iran, Criticizes Israel

Trump publicly thanked the Iranian government for issuing a warning before the attack on Qatar, ensuring there were no casualties or deaths. Despite his sharp words for Israel, he expressed more irritation with their actions than Iran, stating that they dropped bombs as soon as the ceasefire commenced.

Israeli Airstrikes Continue

Despite Trump's disapproval, Israeli forces continued to attack targets in Iran. According to reports, the Israeli Air Force targeted a radar installation in Tehran, shortly before Israel and Trump agreed to a ceasefire.

Unfinished Goals and Unknown Fate

Days before the ceasefire, Israel stressed that several more days were needed to achieve their war goals. The seemingly quick end to the conflict took many by surprise, leaving the status of Israel's objectives unclear. Israeli security circles claim that the massive air strikes and US attacks have set back Iran's nuclear program by years.

The Fate of Iran's Nuclear Material

Iran insists that it does not aim to build nuclear weapons and only pursues a civilian nuclear program. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirms that Iran possesses over 400 kilograms of uranium with a near-weapons-grade purity of 60%, but its current whereabouts remain unknown. This material could potentially be used to produce multiple nuclear weapons if further enriched to 90%. Expert opinions on the extent of the damage caused by Israeli and American attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities vary.

Civilians Suffer, Death Toll Mounts

The human toll of the conflict is stark. In Iran, at least 1,395 people have been killed and over 4,700 injured in Israeli attacks. In Israel, the loss of life stands at 32, with over 1,000 injured by Iranian rockets. Both countries have sustained significant material damage.

Qatar Acts as Mediator

U.S. media reports suggest that Qatar played a key role in bringing about the ceasefire. The ceasefire, if it holds true to Trump's claim, would mark a significant success for the U.S. president, who aimed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. The Islamic Republic, weakened by Israeli attacks, likely also avoided further escalation, as a large-scale war could have posed a serious threat to Iran's leadership. Israel, claiming their objectives regarding the nuclear program have been met, can now rest a little easier with the ceasefire in place.
