European Court of First Instance Decision: Ruling of the European Court of First Instance of the European Communities on 22 June
In a significant move to combat knife crime, the Dortmund Police have successfully implemented a knife ban, with the Administrative Court of Gelsenkirchen upholding the decision against a 22-year-old Dortmund resident. This ban, which commenced in May 2025, prohibits carrying any kind of knives, dangerous tools, dangerous sports equipment, and animal repellent sprays in public areas.
The individual, subjected to a three-year ban due to repeated offenses involving weapons and aggressive behaviour, is a resident of Dortmund. The ban was an expedited procedure, with 173 people found to have a ban but not carrying a knife or other dangerous object at the time of check.
Since the introduction of these bans, 47 violations have been detected by patrol units. A fine of 250 euros will be imposed if a person with a knife ban is found carrying a knife or similar object. Repeated violations may result in a fine of 500 euros, and further non-compliance may lead to imprisonment.
The knife ban is a key component of the Dortmund Police's comprehensive security concept to combat violence in public spaces. The police see their concept for combating knife crime confirmed with the decision of September 15, 2025. As of August 2025, there are 198 knife-carrying bans in effect within the jurisdiction of the Dortmund Police.
The positive impact of these measures is evident, with the number of crimes involving knives or similar objects having decreased in the first half of 2025. The Dortmund Police are committed to maintaining a safe and secure city, and the knife ban is a significant step towards achieving this goal.
