European Championship Kick-off by Bayern
The Technical Relief Organization (THW) will be heavily involved in the upcoming UEFA European Football Championship 2024, with their focus primarily on the state capital Munich. This federally funded deployment organisation, staffed by around 88,000 volunteers nationwide, will take on a variety of tasks, including logistics, providing specialist advice, and setting up carrier teams within the Munich football stadium.
One of the key roles of these carrier teams will be the swift rescue of injured persons from the steep stands of the stadium. The THW's commitment extends beyond Germany, as they are in demand worldwide by the federal government for various tasks.
The THW Bayern will be extensively involved in the event, with around 200 personnel expected to be deployed at peak times. A standby area set up by the THW will serve as a collection point for up to 70 ambulance vehicles with medical personnel.
Six matches will be held in Munich, with 20 local units from North and South Bavaria participating. The opening match will be held in Munich, Germany.
Four THW specialist advisors from Bavaria and eleven members of the Virtual Operations Support Team (VOST) will support the International Police Coordination Center (IPCC) in North Rhine-Westphalia during the European Championship on a 24-hour basis. The VOST observes the situation on the internet and social media and prepares this information for deployment planning.
The THW's tasks include bilateral aid, EU's civil protection, and tasks for UN organizations. The organisation's involvement in the UEFA European Football Championship 2024 is a testament to their expertise, technology, and extensive experience.
