European Lawmakers Decide on Wolves' Conservation Standing - European Assembly Decides on Wolf Conservation Status

Welcome to a potential shift in wolf conservation in the EU! The European Parliament has taken a monumental step towards redefining the way wolves in Germany are managed, with a change in the EU directive that could simplify culling and other control measures. But what does this mean for farmers and wolves alike?

📅

Following a vote on May 8, 2025, the EU Parliament decided to adjust the wolf's conservation status from "strictly protected" to "protected" under the EU Habitats Directive, aligning it with the Bern Convention.[1][3][5] The change was supported by 371 members, opposed by 162, and 37 abstained.[1]

In Germany, this new status will grant greater flexibility in implementing measures tailored to local conditions, potentially reducing conflicts with farm animals and other stakeholders.[1] Despite the shift, the country still needs to prioritize maintaining a favorable wolf conservation status.[1]

As for the future, once approved by the Council and published in the EU Official Journal, member states will have 18 months to comply with the changes.[1]

For Germany:

  • Newfound Flexibility: More leeway to determine measures that cater to local needs and reduce conflicts with farmers and other stakeholders.
  • Continued Protection: Despite the EU-level shift, Germany can continue to enforce stricter protection measures if necessary to look after its wolf population.
  • Regional Solutions: By allowing regional adaptation in wolf management, the new framework could provide much-needed relief in areas hardest hit by conflicts between wolves and humans.
  1. The new employment policy, resulting from the European Parliament vote, could significantly impact Germany's wildlife conservation sector, providing opportunities for the development of regional solutions to minimize conflicts between wolves and farmers.
  2. The science of environmental conservation, particularly concerning wildlife management, is set to receive a boost as the EU Parliament's decision to adjust the wolf's conservation status opens avenues for climate-change studies in regards to the wolf population.
  3. In light of the EU Parliament's decision, the policy-and-legislation landscape is expected to undergo changes in various EC countries, with a focus on fostering flexibility and sustainability in environmental-science policies and regulations.
