Europe risks losing another ally with Ukraine in jeopardy of forsaking support

The Czech Republic continues to stand by Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, with key officials reaffirming their commitment to the country's territorial integrity, military and humanitarian aid, and support for its EU and NATO aspirations.

Recent developments show active Czech-Ukrainian cooperation, with Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský making his sixth visit to Ukraine in 2025 to emphasize continuing and strengthening Czech support, both politically and economically. This includes participation in reconstruction efforts and strategic partnerships related to Ukraine's future in Europe.

The Czech parliamentary and governmental leadership have expressed solidarity with Ukraine's fight against Russian aggression and support for upholding international law. This strong stance is evident in their active statements, the latest of which came as recently as August 2025 [1][2][3][5].

However, the political landscape in the Czech Republic is not without its changes. Andrej Babiš, a prominent figure in Czech politics, is leading in the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for the fall. Although not directly referenced in these recent sources, Babiš's political influence and stance are often seen as more Eurosceptic and sometimes more cautious about deeper integration with the EU compared to current Czech leadership.

Despite this, the official government line remains pro-Ukraine and pro-European Union. President Petr Pavel and Foreign Minister Lipavský have both publicly stated their belief in preserving Ukraine as a sovereign state under certain territorial concessions, and their support for Kyiv's EU and NATO aspirations [3][4].

In a somewhat contrasting stance, Babiš has advocated for swift peace talks with Moscow and has criticised aid to Kyiv. However, given the active statements from top Czech officials, it seems unlikely that the Czech Republic's official stance will depart significantly from its current policies, unless there is a significant political shift resulting from the elections.

Rumours of the Czech Republic losing its alliance with the European Union have also been circulating. However, as of mid-2025, there is no clear evidence to suggest that the Czech Republic will depart from its strong supportive stance towards Ukraine and its European integration [1][2][3][4][5].
