Straight Talk from the Top: Trump Dismisses Europe's Role in Iran Conflict
Europe lacks the capacity to intervene in the Iran conflict as stated by Trump.
In the heated conflict between Israel and Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump has made it clear he doesn't see a role for European mediation. Asked about recent European talks with Tehran, Trump lashed out, "Europe can't help. Iran wants to talk to us, not them." While closed-door discussions between the U.S. and Iran are underway, Trump hasn't given any hints about what might come next.
Insights from 2025 U.S.–Iran negotiations reveal that direct talks between the U.S. and Iran, without European negotiators, were aim for. Although France showed an interest, it was sidelined from the negotiations, indicating a bypass of European mediation. The U.S. team was led by White House special envoy Steve Witkoff, and the Iranian side by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi[1].
In a bold move, Trump has set a timeline for potential U.S. military involvement in the conflict within two weeks, but now he suggests this timeline might be more aggressive. "Two weeks? Maximum," Trump hinted.
Trump's skepticism extended to a recent diplomatic initiative by European foreign ministers. Sitting down with Iranian chief diplomat Abbas Araghtchi in Geneva, the European team strived to revive negotiations, focusing on Iran's nuclear program. German Foreign Minister Wadephul reported a "good result" from the talks, stating that the Iranian side appeared willing to continue discussions on all critical issues[2].
But Trump wasn't impressed. He dismissed the idea of a ceasefire before negotiations, stating that it's tough to ask that of Israel, given its current advantage in the conflict. Trump also questioned the assessment of U.S. intelligence agencies that Iran is not currently developing nuclear weapons. "If that's what Tulsi Gabbard said, then she's wrong," Trump asserted[3].
