"Europe's Efforts Ain't Needed," Says Trump: Europe Can't Help in Iran Conflict
Europe lacks capacity to intervene in Iran's ongoing conflict, according to Trump.
Got some hot news for ya: Europe's trying to defuse the ongoing Iran nuclear program conflict with a diplomatic push, but President Trump thinks they're chasing shadows. He might call for military action sooner than two weeks down the line.
In the tussle between Israel and Iran, Ol' Donny T doesn't accept the Europeans' mediation as necessary. "Iran ain't interested in chat with Europe. They wanna talk to us. Europe can't help," he spilled the beans when journalists inquired if the recent European chats with Tehran were useful. There's current chat going on between the US and Iran, and we'll see how that pans out, Trump said, without revealing much. Reports reckon Steve Witkoff, Trump's special envoy, is in touch with Tehran.
Politics Wadephul: "A Good Outcome" Iran wants to keep yakking with EU foreign ministers German Foreign Minister Johanna Wadephul, along with her French, British, and EU counterparts, and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas hobnobbed with Iranian chief diplomat Abbas Araghtschi in Geneva last Friday. They aimed to explore a negotiating solution a week after the conflict between Israel and Iran kicked off, particularly regarding Iran's nuclear program. Wadephul, a CDU politician, declared after the meet that they left with the impression that the Iranian side is primed and ready to continue discussing all significant matters.
Iran's foreign minister speculates about a smokescreen
That diplomatic push didn't win any brownie points from Trump. Regarding Tehran's demand for a ceasefire before negotiations, Trump called it a tall order. Israel's "winning" the war against Iran at the moment, he said. It'd be easier if one side wasn't dominating the battlefield. Trump had announced the previous day that he'd decide within two weeks on US military involvement in the war. Now he said two weeks is the "maximum."
Politics Two-week deadline Trump's biggest challenge Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghtschi suggested that the declared two-week deadline for diplomatic efforts may just be a smokescreen. The US needs to prove its sincerity to find a negotiating solution, "or they've got something else up their sleeves and they want to attack Iran anyway," he said in an interview with American broadcaster NBC News. "Maybe they had this plan and needed the negotiations to cover it up," Araghtschi said. Iran no longer trusts the US, he added. The interview took place following Araghtschi's meetings with the Europeans.
Trump was also quizzed about the assessment of US intelligence agencies that Iran isn't currently building a nuclear bomb. "Well, then my intelligence agencies are off the mark," Trump said. If Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard claimed that, she's wrong, Trump emphasized. Gabbard made this statement back in March. Iran keeps affirming that its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes.
