Europe Braces for Colder, Snowier Winter

Prepare for a chilly winter. Experts predict a higher chance of snow, thanks to a weakened polar vortex and early Siberian snow, backed by climate factors and expert opinions.

Europe Braces for Colder, Snowier Winter

Scientists warn of a colder-than-usual winter in northern and central Europe, with a 60 to 75 percent chance of a weakened polar vortex. This could spread cold polar air further, leading to snowier conditions. Early snow in Siberia may exacerbate this effect.

The forecast is based on several factors. La Niña's cooling phase in the Pacific is expected to bring lower temperatures to parts of Canada and the US, potentially leading to heavy snowfall. Meanwhile, the 'Quasi-Biennial Oscillation' (QBO) is predicted to shift to the east wind phase, typically associated with colder weather in Europe.

Researchers, including those studying the La Niña phase and the QBO, have contributed to these winter forecasts. Dr. Reto Knutti from ETH Zurich, while not directly linked, has commented on broader climate trends. Meteorologists at Severe Weather Europe also predict a cold, snowy winter.

Preparations for a colder winter are advised, with an increased likelihood of snowfall in northern and central Europe. The weakened polar vortex and early Siberian snow contribute to this prediction, supported by various climate factors and expert opinions.
