Euro Champions Return to England for Additional Festivities
England Wins Back-to-Back UEFA Women's Euro Titles
After a thrilling penalty shoot-out, England emerged victorious in the UEFA Women's Euro 2022 final against Spain, securing their second consecutive title. This achievement marks a historic milestone in women's football, as Sarina Wiegman becomes the only coach to have won back-to-back UEFA Women's Euro titles with two different national teams.
The final match was a closely contested one, with Alessia Russo scoring the equalizing goal for England during the regular play against Spain. The Spanish team, who had won all their games prior to the final, showcased their exceptional skills throughout the tournament. However, England's goalkeeper, Hannah Hampton, saved two kicks during the penalty shoot-out, ultimately leading to a 3-1 victory for the English team. Chloe Kelly scored the winning goal.
Sarina Wiegman, England's head coach, praised her team's resilience, stating they have come from behind in three consecutive knockout stage games. She also emulated the Germans Tina Theune and Gero Bisanz as the only coaches to have steered a squad to glory on three occasions. Wiegman's tactical mastery has been instrumental in England's success, as they become the first nation to secure back-to-back titles since Germany in 2013.
The Spanish team, featuring players like Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas, played some of the best football in the tournament. However, Bonmati's penalty kick was saved during the shoot-out, contributing to England's victory. Putellas, a two-time Ballon D'Or winner, was also part of the Spanish squad.
Montse Tomé, Spain's head coach, agreed with Bonmati, stating that sometimes the best team doesn't always win in football. Tomé also noted that a penalty kick can be scored or missed by anyone, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of the sport.
England's football team, including players and coaches, were received at 10 Downing Street on Monday afternoon. On Tuesday afternoon, the team will travel along The Mall in central London in an open-top bus, celebrating their well-deserved victory. Angela Rayner and Stephanie Peacock hosted the reception for the team.
With this win, Sarina Wiegman continues to make history in women's football, standing apart by her consistency in reaching five successive major international finals and her tactical mastery that led two different teams to European glory.
