EU to Enact Controversial Exit from Russia
In a significant move towards energy independence, the European Union unveiled the RePowerEU plan in May 2022, a strategic initiative aimed at rapidly reducing the European Union's dependence on Russian fossil fuels. The plan, originally set to phase out Russian energy sources by 2027, is now undergoing a potential acceleration.
According to reports by Bloomberg, the European Commission is considering amending the RePowerEU plan to halt Russian Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imports earlier than the end of 2027. This move could potentially see the EU abandoning Russian energy resources permanently, as asserted by EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen in May.
Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, spokesperson for the European Commission, emphasised the importance of phasing out Russian energy sources earlier rather than later. The European Parliament is also discussing the possibility of accelerating the phase-out by a year, with the aim of completely halting the import of Russian gas by January 2027.
However, not all EU countries are on board with this accelerated phase-out. Hungary and Slovakia, which continue to rely heavily on Russian oil and gas imports, have resisted certain EU sanction packages against Russia. This suggests that they may not have fully committed to the accelerated phase-out of Russian LNG imports by 2026.
The European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, confirmed the intention to stop buying Russian gas on a permanent basis in June. The EU is also considering including provisions for a phased halt to the import of Russian LNG in a new package of sanctions against Russia.
U.S. Energy Secretary Christopher R. discussed the phase-out of Russian gas with EU officials in September, further highlighting the international commitment to reducing reliance on Russian energy.
The European Commission has focused on Russian LNG instead of imposing tariffs on India and China, as many EU countries are reluctant to do so. The Commission is also considering halting Russian LNG imports by amending the RePowerEU plan for restoring supplies.
This accelerated phase-out of Russian energy sources is a significant step towards energy independence for the European Union, and a powerful statement against Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The discussions and decisions made in the coming months will shape the EU's energy future and its stance on global geopolitics.
