German political analyst, Fabian Goldmann, expresses skepticism about a supposed transformation in the German Middle East discourse. He emphasizes that any change would require a distinct approach, characterized by demands for tangible outcomes.

EU remains steadfast in its anti-terrorism efforts.

Heard the latest on Gaza? The winds might be shifting in our Middle East debate, that's for sure. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has found his tongue, the Left party has passed a resolution, and even the Greens are pointing fingers at Israel. But is this the long-awaited turning point? No, it's far from it.

Take a look at what's still happening in Gaza - people are getting massacred by Israel's army. On Tuesday, over 54 lives were taken, Monday saw 47, and the day before saw 108. This is genocide in that narrow coastal strip, and Germany is complicit. The fact that we're still discussing "clear words" when faced with this messages more about our desensitization to daily killings, how deeply the dehumanization of Palestinians runs within us.

Let's think about this for a moment: If an evil Islamic regime were trapping 2 million Israelis, cutting off access to essentials like water, food, medical supplies, and constantly shelling them with grenades and rockets, all with German weapons - would we call a few critical words from our federal chancellor anything but a cynical mockery of the victims?

Fabian Goldmann is a Berlin-based journalist, mostly writing about the unending conflict in the Middle East.

Now imagine French hospitals, Danish schools, Swedish refugee camps were under constant bombardment before our eyes. After over a year and a half of witnessing this, would we, in our right minds, justify a Left party demanding only an end to German arms deliveries and a commitment to the two-state solution? No, we wouldn't.

  • Imagining a Different Scenario: What if the victims were white children? Would we still be calm when we see them starving, bleeding, and burning every day on our timelines? Doubtful.

The fact that we're not losing our minds over it - what does that say about us? About our complicity in this crime against humanity, funded by our tax money, decided by our votes, and masked by our silence?

Even though more and more people are identifying Israel's crimes for what they are, and some are even calling it genocide with German support - the truth is, it's going to take more than a few words to change the winds. We need more from Friedrich Merz, from the Left party, and most importantly, from us.

  • Fabian Goldmann - Journalist analyzing the Middle East conflict
  • Cyrus Salimi-Asl - Discussing the militarization of humanitarian aid in Gaza
  • Aert van Riel - Exploring what distinguishes war crimes from genocide (Book releasing end of May)
  • Matthias Monroy - Advocating for sanctions against Israel for a real change of course in the Gaza war

The question remains: Are we doing enough to stop genocide with German support?
