EU Urges Swift Release of Navalny, Criticizes Kremlin Interference

Borrell, the EU's high rep for foreign affairs, stressed that Russia's political leadership was accountable for Navalny's health and well-being in prison. The opposition figure is now suffering under "politically motivated imprisonment".

Monday saw Navalny's supporters reporting they hadn't heard from him for nearly a week. U.S. officials shared their "deep concern" and called for an "immediate" release of Navalny, the Russian critic.

On Tuesday, the Kremlin responded to this U.S. interference by criticizing "unacceptable" meddling in the Navalny case. Kremlin spokesman Peskov maintained that the court-convicted prisoner was serving his sentence fairly.

Navalny's team reported inconsistencies in court appearances and mentioned a possible release from prison. His spokesperson, Yarmish, hinted that an employee of IK-6 had said Navalny had "left the colony". However, his current whereabouts remain unknown.

The increased prison term of 19 years and stricter conditions in a penal camp due to "extremism" charges drew controversy. Lengthy transfer processes in Russia (weeks or more) fuel suspicions about the fairness of the judicial system.

February 2022 marked the intensification of Kremlin's crackdown on Navalny, opposition figures, and activists since the start of the Russian conflict in Ukraine.
