EU Readies Penalties Against China over Alleged Support for Russia in Ukraine Conflict

The European Union (EU) is gearing up to impose sanctions on China in response to the covert supply of drone engines to Russia, a move that is aimed at curbing China's support for Moscow's military industry and its role in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The decision to impose sanctions comes after a July report by Reuters revealed that Chinese drone engines were funneled to Russia through intermediary companies disguising them as “industrial refrigeration units” to evade Western sanctions.

Although China has maintained a "neutral position" in the war, an unnamed EU diplomat told Politico that the report is accurate and shows China's increasing role in the war. The diplomat also stated that without China's support, the war would look very different now.

The EU has recognised and expressed concern over China's role in supporting Russia's military industry through these drone engine supplies. Fifteen EU member states have confronted Beijing about these shipments, but China has either denied involvement or ignored these inquiries.

EU officials emphasise that the bloc desires both dialogue and concrete action, reflecting growing frustration within the EU over China’s role in undermining international sanctions regimes. The diplomat emphasised the EU’s economic influence, stating "We want dialogue, but also action."

The EU will insist on the imposition of sanctions after August, according to the diplomat. However, the final decision and implementation are expected very soon, likely this fall after August, contingent on ongoing political and diplomatic processes.

It is important to note that the US stated last year that China had effectively taken Russia's side in the war. This new fact adds weight to the EU's decision to impose sanctions on China.

The EU's decision to impose sanctions on China is a significant development in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the global response to Russia's actions. The final decision and implementation are eagerly awaited, and the EU's actions could set a precedent for other countries that are perceived to be undermining international sanctions regimes.

  1. The EU's decision to impose sanctions on China, as a response to their support of Moscow's military industry through covert supply of drone engines, could mark a significant shift in policy-and-legislation related to war-and-conflicts and politics.
  2. As the EU moves forward with their sanctions, general-news outlets have reported increased scrutiny on China's "neutral position" in war-and-conflicts, as well as growing concern over their role in evading international sanctions regimes through policy-and-legislation and deception.
