EU Provides Aid for Firefighting Efforts

The European Union has taken proactive steps to combat the rising threat of forest fires during this summer season. As stated by the EU, it has amassed firefighting teams and aircraft to aid countries across Europe grappling with forest fires.

To swiftly support local fire departments, approximately 650 firefighters from 14 European countries will be strategically stationed at high-risk locations in France, Greece, Portugal, and Spain between July and August. Moreover, 22 firefighting planes and four helicopters are stationed in 10 Member States ready to intervene where necessary.

Extra support for Portugal includes two light aircraft as part of the EU-supported summer fleet. The resources are coordinated and co-funded through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, with the aim of reducing risks and enhancing a more efficient response to crises. These resources supplement national capacities as stated by the European Commission.

In addition to these ground forces, 19 firefighting teams, consisting of around 30 firefighters each, and an assessment team are on standby to be deployed in collaboration with Member States. A dedicated wildfire support team will also be established within the EU Emergency Response Coordination Centre to monitor potential threats and analyze data.

The EU Civil Protection Mechanism serves to coordinate efforts to tackle natural and man-made disasters at an EU level and foster cooperation between national authorities. In previous years, such as 2025, similar deployments have included massive coordination and over 20 firefighting aerial vehicles [2]. This pattern of increased support in the fight against forest fires indicates the EU's determination to stay vigilant against disaster, especially those worsened by climate change.
