EU Plans to Establish a Unified System of Digital Information Hubs across Europe
The Queergelesen book club, a joint initiative of the Women's and Gender Library Saar and the University of the Saarland's Queer Working Group, is set to hold its next meeting on August 20, 2025, at 7:30 PM at the FrauenGenderBibliothek Saar (Großherzog-Friedrich-Straße 111, 66121 Saarbrücken). The focus of the meeting will be on Jeanette Winterson's futuristic novel, "The Stone Gods" (German title: Die steinernen Götter).
This event welcomes participants who have finished reading the book, as well as those who are still in the process. Online attendance is also available for those unable to attend in person.
The book club, named Queergelesen, explores literature and films focusing on queer perspectives, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other queer identities. It aims to critically question societal expectations and deconstruct clichés, creating visibility and fostering dialogue among queer individuals.
The central character of "The Stone Gods" is Billie, a woman who opposes genetic fixation and eternal youth, and embraces natural aging and love. The novel presents a dystopian world where eternal youth is technologically possible, but the Earth is suffering from human exploitation.
Engaging with different life realities through the book club is believed to lead to more empathy and less discrimination among heterosexuals.
