SPD's Eichwede: No More Border Bans on Asylum Seekers, Despite Dobrindt's Demands

Ongoing denial of asylum seekers by the SPD parliamentary group vice-president, Eichwede, remains legally questionable. - EU Parliament Members Urge Commission to Enhance External Relations with Central and Eastern European Nations

Sonja Eichwede, SPD's deputy leader, voiced her opposition to the rejection of asylum seekers, stating that it remains unlawful. Eichwede, previously a judge, claimed that Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) has yet to issue a formal command to the Federal Police to carry out such rejections.

Eichwede's assumption is that the Federal Police will continue to avoid implementing rejections, fearing legal repercussions. She predicts that the status quo will persist, with no significant changes in this area, or else, legal action could ensue.

During his Wednesday announcement, Dobrindt proposed strengthening border controls to curb refugee influx. This includes increasing the presence of the Federal Police at the borders and denying asylum to individuals who fail to meet certain qualifications. However, exceptions will be made for vulnerable groups such as children and pregnant women.

The EU laws may challenge the legitimacy of Germany's actions, given conflicting stances within the government[4]. As the regulations are subject to legal challenges and EU approval, the situation remains uncertain.
