Election Victory for Prime Minister Edi Rama in Albania
EU membership assessment: Prime Minister Rama secures parliamentary victories
Prime Minister Edi Rama's Socialist Party emerged victorious in the Albanian parliamentary elections, as per preliminary results published by the Albanian Electoral Commission. The party garnered 52.6% of the votes, while the largest opposition coalition led by Rama's right-wing rival, Sali Berisha, received 34.1%. With 40% of all votes cast counted, the turnout was around 42.2%.
These elections were considered a pivotal test for Albania's path to EU membership. Rama, who has been in power since 2013, campaigned on the twin benefits of EU accession and managing the immigration crisis. Albania joined NATO in 2009 and submitted its application for EU membership the same year.
The first intergovernmental conference for accession negotiations took place in July 2022. Despite significant progress, challenges such as corruption and organized crime are often cited as obstacles to Albania's EU membership.
In a collaboration with the EU founding member Italy, the government in Tirana signed an agreement to accommodate up to 40,000 boat refugees annually in centers and process asylum applications before the EU border.
Albania is making impressive progress in its EU accession process. With the election outcome, the country appears more committed than ever to EU integration. The next milestone is set for May 22, 2025, when Albania will officially open negotiations for Cluster 3 ("Competitiveness and Inclusive Growth").
However, challenges remain: implementing reforms in the rule of law, fighting corruption, ensuring free press, and amending electoral law are essential for EU membership. Sustained regional stability, particularly amid ongoing tensions in the Western Balkans, is crucial for the EU's willingness to move forward with enlargement. The EU expects alignment in foreign policy and consistent implementation and enforcement of reforms to close negotiating chapters and advance the accession process further.
