EU Launches Formal Investigations Into Meta and TikTok Over Data Transparency

The European Commission has launched formal investigations into Meta and TikTok for failing to meet transparency obligations under the Digital Services Act. If confirmed, these breaches could result in hefty fines of up to 6% of their annual global revenue.

The Commission alleges that both companies have made it overly difficult for researchers to access public data on their platforms. Meta's Facebook and Instagram have also been criticized for lacking accessible tools to report serious content violations. Meanwhile, in the tech world, John Nitti, the global head of revenue operations and advertising innovation at X, has left the company after just 10 months. This departure adds to a growing list of high-level executives exiting under Elon Musk's leadership.

In contrast, Apple is planning to enhance its advertising capabilities. The tech giant aims to use AI to deliver more relevant ad placements and improve the user interface. Additionally, Apple Maps is set to introduce advertisements as early as next year, with sponsored listings for physical businesses like restaurants and retail stores.

The European Commission's investigations into Meta and TikTok highlight the importance of transparency and accessibility in the tech industry. Meanwhile, Apple's plans for AI-driven ad placements and advertisements in Apple Maps signal a new direction in the company's advertising strategy.
