The European Union (EU) and India are weaving a complex tapestry of relations, as both parties navigate a landscape of trade, security, and geopolitics.

The latest development in this intricate relationship comes as US President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on India, half of it as punishment for buying Russian fuel. This move, however, does not seem to have significantly disrupted the momentum in EU-India ties.

India, a 'moderating voice' that does not subscribe to the anti-Western agenda in forums such as BRICS and the China-led Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), is considered a crucial player in the global arena. The EU, recognising India's strategic importance, has proposed a new strategic agenda with India.

Europe still needs to procure equipment from trusted partners due to insufficient domestic production. In this context, Europe is seen as a potential buyer for Indian defense exports, with India aiming to sell €5 billion in defense exports by 2029. Germany has also decided to double its trade volume with India, and India is banking on Germany's support for the EU-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

The EU's new strategic agenda aims to lure India away from Russia's orbit of influence through a trade deal and enhanced strategic ties. However, the EU is not pushing India to Russia's corner. Instead, it is deepening ties with India, as evident in the key part of the EU's strategic agenda that focuses on fostering defense industrial cooperation with India.

The strengthening of relations between the EU and India is influenced by India's strategic geopolitical positioning, its growing market and production capacity, the EU's desire to diversify economic partnerships beyond China, and shared interests in global governance and security challenges. These factors are expected to enhance trade cooperation through stable export and investment channels while fostering collaboration in security policy, especially in areas like technology, energy, and responding to geopolitical risks.

The EU and the US are aligning their policies against Russia due to its war in Ukraine. This alignment is reflected in the EU's decision to call on the bloc to impose up to 100% tariffs on India for its continued purchases of Russian oil. However, experts suggest that there may not be a complete resolution of all differences by the end of the year.

India and France share the same determination to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron discussed Ukraine with the Indian Prime Minister and updated him on security guarantees Europe is planning for Ukraine. This dialogue underscores the growing cooperation between the EU and India in matters of global security.

Recent events, such as India's participation in Russia-led Zapad military exercises in Belarus, have not derailed the positive trajectory of EU-India relations. While such events may raise concerns, they have not disrupted the overall momentum towards a more balanced and resilient partnership.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, in a phone call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, skipped any mention of US demands for sanctions or higher tariffs, instead emphasizing excellent relations. This exchange underscores the importance both parties place on maintaining a strong and cooperative relationship.

In conclusion, the EU-India relationship is a complex tapestry of trade, security, and geopolitics. As both parties navigate this landscape, they are forging a partnership that is expected to be mutually beneficial and influential in global affairs.
