EU Greens advocate for further amendments to asylum policies

The Green Party in Germany is urging for a long-term, Europe-wide solution to the ongoing asylum crisis, as the current German government under Chancellor Friedrich Merz adopts a hardline stance on migration.

In a recent statement, Franziska Brantner, the Green Party's European policy spokeswoman, emphasized the need for a coalition of the willing to address the EU's asylum system issues. Brantner has criticized Interior Minister Horst Seehofer for pursuing unrealistic demands, such as camps in North Africa, and has urged him to focus on a realistic European asylum policy instead.

Brantner has proposed EU-led arrival centers for registration and initial checks, followed by distribution for asylum procedures and cooperation for any returns. She has also advocated for Europe-wide processing of asylum procedures for newly arriving migrants.

The southern EU countries have signaled their inability to accept asylum procedures at the EU's external borders, a stance that Brantner understands, likening it to only southern German states handling all asylum procedures in Germany. Brantner has accused Seehofer of prioritizing domestic politics over a realistic European asylum policy.

The current German government has adopted a tough stance on the proposed new EU asylum system, emphasizing stricter asylum and deportation measures. This includes rejecting undocumented asylum seekers at the borders and accelerating deportations to certain countries like Syria. Germany is positioning itself as a leader in pushing tougher migration rules in the EU, aligning with several hardline countries to drastically reduce asylum arrivals and streamline returns.

The Green Party continues to advocate for a new EU asylum system, urging the federal government to increase efforts in negotiations for its implementation. The party's stance is a departure from the current government's hardline approach, with Brantner emphasizing the need for a more humane and cooperative solution to the asylum crisis.

Other European countries, besides Germany, should collaborate in formulating a realistic European asylum policy-and-legislation, according to Brantner, the Green Party's European policy spokeswoman. Brantner's proposal includes establishing EU-led arrival centers for registration, initial checks, and distribution for asylum procedures, advocating for Europe-wide processing of asylum procedures for newly arriving migrants, and criticizing the current government's focus on domestic politics over a humane and cooperative solution to the asylum crisis.
