Union Berlin Faces Hefty Fine for Pyrotechnic Use at Bundesliga Matches

In a stern reminder of the zero-tolerance policy towards pyrotechnics at Bundesliga games, Union Berlin has been fined €173,000 by the German Football Association (DFB). The penalty is a result of five incidents involving pyrotechnic displays by Union fans during three away games and two home games in the recent season.

The most severe fine, €72,000, was imposed for the pyrotechnic display at the match against Borussia Dortmund, which Union lost 6-0. The fans' actions during the game against Bochum resulted in a penalty of €64,000. The club also incurred fines for the matches against Gladbach, Leverkusen, and Stuttgart, amounting to €1,000, €9,000, and €27,000 respectively.

However, Union Berlin has the option to use €57,600 of the fine towards its own security or violence prevention measures.

The use of pyrotechnics, including flares, smoke bombs, and similar devices, is strictly prohibited under both club and DFB regulations, both within and around the stadium during matches. Violators face heavy fines, with penalties being levied on a per-incident basis.

For instance, Eintracht Frankfurt was fined €91,750 in one season for igniting at least 35 flares during a single match and similar infractions in other games. Throwing objects like cups or lighters is also penalized, with offenders facing stadium bans, reporting to police, and fines for individuals.

Despite some instances where clubs may be required to donate to charity or community projects as part of broader sanctions for misconduct, there are no explicit exceptions allowing pyrotechnic use for any reason, including security or violence prevention initiatives.

In summary, the Bundesliga prohibits pyrotechnic use at its games with severe penalties for violations. The 173,000-euro fine imposed on Union Berlin is a clear indication of the league's commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for players and fans alike.

Union Berlin's fine for using pyrotechnics at Bundesliga matches extends to European leagues, as they were penalized for displays during games against Bochum, Gladbach, Leverkusen, Stuttgart, and Borussia Dortmund. The increased use of pyrotechnics in sports, such as football, could lead to stricter regulations across European leagues.
