EU disburses additional loans worth a billion to Ukraine

The European Commission has disrupted the fourth tranche of its exceptional macro-financial assistance (MFA) loan to Ukraine. EU Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis proclaimed, "We're still backing Ukraine, politically, financially, economically, and militarily." This payment marks another €1 billion from the G7's exceptional initiative worth up to 45 billion euros [1].

Ukraine is adamant about implementing a 30-day ceasefire for peace talks, asserting, "A full and unconditional ceasefire must be the first step towards a just and lasting peace" [1]. The three-day ceasefire, announced by the Kremlin for Victory Day on May 9, was deemed a mere "manipulation" by Andriy Yermak, Kyiv's chief of staff, and a genuine 30-day ceasefire is considered a test of Russia's seriousness [1].

Russian airports face chaos leading up to the Moscow Victory Day parade, sparked by anxiety over potential Ukrainian drone attacks [1]. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized Ukraine's role in liberating Europe from Nazism during WWII remembrance, in a time when Russia's invasion invokes comparisons to fascism [1].

Several Ukrainian troops disclosed receiving orders to only open fire in response to Russian attacks during the alleged ceasefire [1]. Tensions in some areas have shown decreases in artillery attacks and Russian activities, despite the constant threat persisting.

The pro-Russian "Night Wolves" motorcycle group rallied in Brandenburg, Germany, visiting two Soviet memorial sites and laying wreaths, under the watchful eye of the police [1]. Embarrassingly, in Sterlitamak, two old Soviet-era tanks succumbed to a malfunction during parade rehearsals, adding insult to injury amidst the build-up to major celebrations [1].

Ukrainian forces allegedly tried to breach the Russian region of Kursk, according to Russian reports [1]. Ukraine, on the other hand, blames Russia for hundreds of ceasefire violations along the entire front [1].

Ukraine has ratified a resource agreement with the USA, granting preferential access to American resources such as rare earths, primarily needed in the high-tech and defense industry [1]. Meanwhile, new talks are underway in Poland regarding a potential additional 17th sanctions package targeting Russian companies and individuals [2].

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant faces ongoing threats due to shelling, with one power circuit shut down due to the ongoing attacks [1].

In a joint move aimed at bolstering its security, Poland has asked Germany to extend its German Patriot missile defense system to guard an airport in Rzeszów for a prolonged period [3].
