EU Countries Push for Lesser Packaging Waste

With environmental concerns at the forefront, EU countries are aiming to drastically reduce packaging waste within the next decade. The target set is a reduction of at least 15% by 2040, compared to 2018 levels as per the consensus reached in Brussels.

Manufacturers and importers will be obligated by this new policy to minimize the weight and volume of their packaging. Exceptions will be made for protected packaging designs, ensuring sustainability doesn't compromise product integrity.

The moment packaging turns waste, it should be promptly collected, sorted, and recycled using top-notch standards. This applies to all categories of packaging, regardless of material, and origin – including industries, retail, or households. Clearly labeled instructions should guide consumers on recycling or disposal methods for each packaging type.

Reusable packaging and compostable alternatives are also considered essential. Eventually, tea bags and adhesive labels on fruits and vegetables could become compostable. Mandatory compliance for other types of packaging, such as coffee capsules and lightweight plastic bags, is still being considered.

Key steps for the implementation of this policy are negotiations with the European Parliament. In the meantime, the current situation shows a consistent surge in packaging waste in Europe, which outpaces recycling rates.

Over the past ten years, the percentage of packaging waste has gone up by nearly 25%. If measures aren't taken, it may increase by an additional 19% by 2030. The increase in plastic packaging waste is expected to hit a 46% mark by 2030.

Economic importance of packaging production and waste management is undeniable, with a whopping €370 billion turnover contribution from the sector across EU countries.

The EU statistics agency Eurostat reports 188.7 kg of packaging waste per capita in the EU in 2021. The data varies within EU countries, with Croatia producing less than 80 kg, and Ireland generating roughly double the amount. Germany is just behind Ireland, producing 237 kg per capita.
