Markus Lanz is set to discuss asylum policy with his guests. With SPD politician Anke Rehlinger joining the chat, a lively debate is promised.

The SPD recently found itself in the spotlight when some party members published a manifesto, urging a change in foreign and security policy. The manifesto suggests talks with Russia and questions the NATO's five-percent target. These events come just before the NATO summit and the SPD party conference.

Wednesday evening, Anke Rehlinger of the SPD is scheduled to talk with Markus Lanz. While she shares some concerns about her party's left-wing stance, she remains calm and collected. She acknowledges that the ongoing discussions among SPD members have been going on for a while. Regarding the paper released by Rolf Mützenich and Ralf Stegner, Rehlinger says, "It's an exciting moment before the party conference, but it's not illegitimate to bring certain opinions into the public. Whether they gain widespread support remains to be seen." She favors a more proactive approach towards defense and diplomacy with Russia. "At this moment, cooperation with Putin's Russia isn't advisable, as President Putin is taking actions well beyond acceptable limits," she explains and adds, "For cooperation, there must be a willing partner on the other side, and I don't see Russia being inclined towards cooperation."

Hot Topics Borders and Immigration German Leaders Call for Intelligent Border Solutions

"I wouldn't be surprised if a similar debate arises in immigration policy," predicts Daniel Thym, a migration law expert, during the show. Thym expresses doubts about the current border controls, calling them a temporary measure and characterized as the starting shot for asylum policy changes.

Rehlinger raises concerns about the current border controls, indicating longer traffic jams at the border with Luxembourg. She proposes a joint patrol in a border corridor to address these issues and lower the risk of migration. "We should focus on smarter border solutions than having many federal police officers guard makeshift border barriers," she suggests.

Hot Topics Legal Issues and Migration Policies Experts Differ on the Validity of Border Controls

Thym argues that the border controls lack sufficient legal preparation, with some critics suggesting that it's simple because it's in the German law. However, this view has been challenged after a court judgment in Berlin, which deemed the rejections of three refugees in individual cases to be legally invalid.

Thym believes that if a suitable justification for an emergency situation is presented, there's a chance that courts could accept the German approach at the borders at least for some time. "The justification wouldn't be the asylum application numbers, which have already been declining for some time," states Thym, "Rather, it would be the challenges we face in the medium and long-term integration – in the labor market, education system, housing market. And these are significant issues that need to be addressed."

Regarding the broader principles of asylum policies, Thym supports the need for rules and their enforcement. He emphasizes the importance of migration control and the legitimacy of having regulations to ensure a balanced and harmonious society.
